Dr. Thordarson is the founder of “Fio Joy (to become
joyful)”, Oakville’s first makeover story. Susan was our “Fio Joy”
Journey candidate for 2005. Please visit our special Fio Joy website
at www.fiojoy.com for a detailed
story about Susan and a complete set of Susan’s transitional photographs.
Susan is a young woman of 27 years who was missing 15 teeth from birth. She had jaw joint
clicking in the right jaw joint, misaligned lower molars and wear patterns caused from the
misaligned teeth as a result of numerous spaces.
Susan’s first visit was for a thorough dental examination including x-rays and photographs.
Plaster models were made followed by a wax model of the perfect set of teeth. Once the analysis
was complete, Dr. Thordarson and Susan mapped out a treatment plan to accomplish their
goals.
By looking at Susan’s “before” picture, you immediately notice the missing teeth and the large
gaps that remain. Orthodontic braces were used to straighten her upper teeth and to move
them closer together.
Once her teeth were aligned, we began the restorative work. Dr. T prepared all the upper
teeth in one appointment. He then prepared temporary crowns.
The next visit was to prepare all the lower teeth and insert temporary crowns. The reason we
create temporary crowns and bridges is to allow our clients to visualize the look and to decide
if the shade and the shape of the teeth are appropriate for the face. It also allows the client
to “try the teeth” to see if any changes or refinements need to be made. Only then, are final
crowns and bridges made and placed.
When the temporaries were inserted, Susan was very pleased with her new look. Throughout
her life Susan developed the habit of smiling in a way that would hide her teeth. She needed
to learn to smile again. She had to learn to smile widely and show off her lovely, new smile.
She could now share it with the world but it would take getting used to.
The temporary crowns are so comfortable that many of our clients ask if they can keep them
instead of changing to permanent crowns. Susan was no different. She was very pleased with
her temporary smile but she knew that these were only to check for bite shade and shape.
Once we are sure the crowns are correct and the client can speak normally, we have the crowns
and bridges made by the artists at our dental laboratory.
Susan’s next appointment was to insert the crowns and bridges, making sure that they are
perfect in colour, shape, size and occlusion. Dr. Thordarson again checked the way Susan
spoke and pronounced her words. The final appointment was a few days after the insertion
appointment. At that time, her bite was checked again and her speech rechecked.
On November 10, 2005, Dr. Thordarson presented Susan to the public at a special Fio Joy
Gala for over 200 people at the Oakville Club. The Mayor of Oakville was in attendance to
see Susan’s transformation.
Susan was delighted with her new look!
